Greg Mellick, head of Australia’s RSL, called the protesters’ actions “a disgrace to the nation” and said they “must be condemned in the strongest way”. “If any individuals or groups choose to express their political opinions, positions or ideological theories in the shrine grounds at any time, they do not fully respect the sanctity of this ancient place.” “The shrine should not be a place of protest under any circumstances,” she said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon. The Victorian Returnees and Services Association also condemned those it says occupied the shrine, saying the site is “sacred and not a protest square”.
